  1. Los Angeles was initially called “El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora Reina de los Angeles sobre el Rio Porciuncula,” which in Spanish translates to “The Town of Our Lady Queen of the Angels on the Porciuncula River.”

  1. By 1923, nearly 25% of the world’s oil was produced in Los Angeles.

  1. Within the Los Angeles coroner’s office is a gift shop.

  1. Thomas Edison, who lived in New Jersey, held most of the patents for the country’s film. To get away from his claims on intellectual property, filmmakers headed west to LA, which is now the capital of the film industry.

  1. Affluent Beverly Hills was originally a ranch on which lima beans were grown.

  1. Originally, the Santa Monica Pier was intended as protection for a sewage pipe through which treated sewage was dumped into the ocean.
