7 Fun and Interesting Ways to Kill Time If Your Flight is Seriously Delayed

What can be more frustrating than a delayed flight? You are probably a busy person and keep a tight schedule, and when you are forced to stop and step out of your comfort zone, it can be stressful. You may have appointments that you will miss and perhaps another flight that will leave without you, adding to the stress. The first thing to do is to realize that there is absolutely nothing that you can do about a delayed flight, so you may as well make the best of a bad situation and look at the extra time as a bonus. You can relax, take a nap or read without feeling guilty about wasting time. If you are prepared for such things though, you can use the time productively if you choose – and maybe have a little fun too.

1. Read a Book

Never travel without a good book or two. You may think that if the flight is supposed to be short, you will not need to bring anything to read. However, unexpected things happen, and it is good to be prepared. You could bring a book to help you learn something interesting or educational – perhaps something to help you with your career. Bring a book that is fun to read too – something entertaining or amusing will make the time seem to go faster.

2. Bring a Laptop Computer

There are numerous possibilities of things that you can do if you have a computer. You may catch up on work, do some research, shop online, read and send emails or play games. Games that make you think, like Solitaire, help to keep your mind sharp.

3. Make Some Phone Calls

Use your cell phone to make calls that you have been putting off because you didn’t have time. Call family and friends who would love to hear from you and chat for a while. If your flight delay is causing you to miss appointments, make phone calls to re-schedule them.

4. Write Letters

Write letters to friends and loved ones. Emails are fast and Facebook is great, but people can keep letters and read them again and again. Older people with lots of time on their hands especially enjoy receiving letters. They feel special when they get letters and will boast about them to their friends. Each time they read the letters, they will have pleasant thoughts for hours.

5. Make New Friends

Visit with fellow travelers. An airport is the ideal place to meet a wide variety of people from many different states and countries. Strike up a conversation with someone and learn about other cultures and different locations. If you happen to be involved in a business in which you could benefit from attracting new people to your organization, share your opportunity with people that you talk to, and your delay may turn into a benefit.

6. Get Some Exercise

If the airport offers a fitness center, take advantage of it. If it does not have such amenities, stash your carry-on bags in a locker, and go for a brisk walk along the corridors. You will be sitting long enough when you finally get into the plane.

7. Take a Nap

Roll up your jacket or whatever you may have handy to use for a pillow, get comfortable and get some sleep.

Any time you encounter an unavoidable delay, fretting about it will only create stress, so just accept what you cannot change and do something useful, educational, restful or fun, and enjoy yourself. You will get where you are going just as quickly if you don’t worry about it as you will if you complain, and you may influence some of your fellow travelers to relax too.
