New Year's Eve Family Sleepover at Aquarium of the Pacific

Ring in the new year as a family at this marine-themed celebration. Children ages five and up (with an adult chaperone) can dine on pizza, go on a glow-in-the-dark scavenger hunt, touch a live shark, feed fish and take in fireworks from the Café Scuba Terrace, all while learning about the night's theme: deep sea–animal adaptations. The jam-packed event concludes with a family-fun sleepover in the aquarium gallery (bring sleeping bags!), followed by breakfast and a tour of the seals and sea lions. Pizza + sharks + fireworks + sleepover = FUN!

New Year's Eve at the Comedy Store

Choose among the Comedy Store's laugh-out-loud weekly show or two special holiday shows starring resident comedians, with a champagne toast at midnight. There will be 16 different acts in The Main Room, with Shawn Pelofsky headlining (he's described as Dane Cook + Kathy Griffin's likely love child). The Original Room will have 14 comedians on-stage, including up-and-comer Eleanor Kerrigan, who originally started out as a Comedy Store waitress. And then there's The Ding Dong Show, Don Barris' bizarre weekly display that's the longest-running show in the comedy club's history. The Ding Dong show is free, and perfect if you're looking for a cheap NYE night out, but keep in mind all shows here have a two-drink minimum.

Noon Year's Eve at Kidspace Children's Museum

This cute kid celebration mimics a grown-up New Year's Eve fete but counts down to a balloon drop at noon rather than midnight. Little ones can make party hats and noisemakers together beforehand, dance to live music starting at 11:30am and sip on sparkling cider to welcome in the "noon" year.

New Year's Eve Musical Revue

Looking for a lively way to spend New Year's Eve without having to listen to infinite remixes of "Diamonds in the Sky" and "Gangnam Style"? Check out the Santa Monica Playhouse's annual New Year's Eve Revue, which this year also includes festivities to coincide with the playhouse's 50th anniversary. Expect audience-favorite songs, dances and comedy from the past five decades. From 40s jazz and classic country to Jewish patter songs and romantic ballads, there's something for almost everyone. Admission also includes a buffet dinner with champagne, festive hats and prizes. There are two shows, 6pm and 9:30pm. Those who opt for the later show can stay to ring in 2013 at midnight.
