Fun Friday...Black Box Theatre and Los Angeles

Black Box Theatre, also called experimental theatre, is an art form all to itself. It became popular and widespread in the 1960’s and 1970’s in an attempt to have a place for low-cost experimental theatre. If you have not had the black box experience as an audience member imagine a small capacity audience crowd of typically 30-60 people, an entirely BLACK  room devoid of any ornate markings or surroundings to distract the audience. Seating styles can vary but are set up so that each seat provides you a view of the small “stage area” which can be eye level with the first row depending on how it is set up. The room size could be as small as 17 ft X 12ft. This is up-close and personal theater.  It can be a very intense and enjoyable experience that cannot be seconded by large performance halls, and lends itself to special and unique types of performances.

If you would like to take part in this eclectic experience visit a theatre such as The Asylum Lab on 1078 Lillian Way (@ Santa Monica Blvd. ) Hollywood, CA. It has a 40 Seats theatre that is perfect for improv, sketch, solo, workshops, auditions and rehearsals. Running through March 30th Thurs. – Sat. at 8p.m. and Sun at 7PM is  MINE by award-winning playwright Bekah Brunstetter. MINE is a universal coming of age around 30-ish story that takes place in Manhattan.  Visit https://www.exclusivesedan.com/assets/uploads-2012-03-shutterstock_7390429-300x234.jpg for tickets or the theatre website at https://www.exclusivesedan.com/assets/uploads-2012-03-shutterstock_7390429-300x234.jpg

Another theatre in the area is The Little Theater located at 12420 Santa Monica Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90025. It is a 49 seat playhouse that is home to the Performing Artists Cooperative and The Los Angeles Children s Theater. The space is available for rental as well, and is the perfect venue for films, stage productions, classes, dance and fitness.

If you are an actor who is young to the industry this is a great place to hone your skills. In fact, Beverly Hills Acting School located  at 254 S. Robertson Blvd., Beverly Hills, CA 90211 has a black box theatre upstairs which holds two classes per week, as well as theatre productions.

Next time you’re in the mood for a unique experience, seek out the black box for an experience you will never forget! And call us to get you there!
