Get Ready to Indulge in the Most Awesome Summer Sports in L.A.

When there’s great warm weather on the horizon (if it isn’t here already), the thought of indulging in all types of summer sports and activities seem to come almost unbidden to the mind. It’s definitely something to look forward to, and at the very least, it’s an excuse to just be active outdoors. Of course, everyone has their own preference of summer sports that range from calming ones to intense adrenaline-pumping ones, so it’s up to you to pick your own challenge.

Summer Water Sports

It’s probably insane to even consider any kind of outdoor water sports in winter, and even in spring or fall, it’s usually a little more nippy than preferred. Since summer is about the only season that most people would agree on for most outdoor water sports, here are our top suggestions just for you:

Swimming

Even if you’re not a competitive swimmer, you can still have plenty of fun in the water. It’s a great form of physical exercise anytime of the year, but since warm weather makes this activity a whole lot better, now’s the time to start enjoying swimming outdoors.

Suggestion: El Pescador State Beach, Paradise Cove Beach, Venice Beach

Surfing

Here’s an activity that does require more practice (with the very high possibility of wipeouts), but once you get the hang of it, you might be able to perform a hang ten that will wow the beach crowd. There are always classes available, and this summer is a great time to start.

Suggestion: Zuma Beach County Park and Westward Beach, Malibu Lagoon State Beach

Windsurfing

Sailing requires more effort, time and money, so another great alternative to feel the wind as you whip across the waves is windsurfing. Like other water sports out on the ocean, there are always risks of falling into the water, so just keep in mind not to panic if your head goes under.

Suggestion: Leo Carrillo State Beach, Will Rogers State Beach, Nicholas Canyon County Beach

Kayaking

It can be a calm and peaceful outing or a more adventurous one, so take your pick. If you choose a lake, you’ll probably have more time to get used to it, but if you’re on water that moves more quickly, things are going to get exciting a whole lot faster.

Suggestion: Redondo Beach, Topanga State Beach

Summer Land Sports

Of course, there are plenty of sports to choose from for landlubbers all year round, so it’s usually a matter of picking something you’ll enjoy. Since summer provides the perfect temperature for outdoor activities, it makes sense to bring the fun out into the sun, and we’ve got some great summer sport ideas to share with you:

Baseball

It’s undoubtedly one of America’s favorite pastimes, but have you ever swung a bat or pitched a ball on the field before this? Just take note that hand and eye coordination is key, and if you don’t quite get how it’s done at the start, don’t feel frustrated. Just take things slowly and remember to have fun.

Suggestion: Pan Pacific Park, Balboa Sports Center, La Cienega Park

Handball

This fast-paced team sport is a great option whether you decide to play indoors or outdoors. Although it’s an Olympic entry, you needn’t feel pressured to give your best performance during a game. Just organize a friendly match with friends (or even strangers) and learn from one another.

Suggestion: Stoner Recreation Center, Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Park, Culver West Alexander Park

Soccer

Whether it’s called soccer or football (if you’re not from America), there’s plenty of fans around the world who go crazy at the mention of their favorite team. For those who aren’t acquainted with this sport, it’s never too late. About all you need is two goalkeepers and a few people to start an enjoyable game.

Suggestion: Playa Vista Sports Park, Santa Monica Airport Field, Vista Hermosa

Biking

Most of us would have been encouraged to ride a bike while we were young, and some of us have continued this fun and invigorating pastime in adulthood. If it’s been awhile since your bike wheels have last turned, now’s the time to get on while the weather’s nice and warm.

Suggestion: Ballona Creek Bike Path, The Rose Bowl, Griffith Park

Frisbee Golf

Are you into frisbee? If you are, how do you the like the idea of combining frisbee and golf together? Some locations are a haven for frisbee golf, and more and more parks are incorporating frisbee golf areas for the public to enjoy. About all you’ll need to bring is a couple of frisbees and you’re ready to go.

Suggestion: Chavez Ridge Disc Golf Course, Kenneth Hahn Disc Golf Course

Rock Climbing

Although it’s technically more of an extreme sport, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try it out. If you’re into thrills, especially those that include being at a certain distance away from the ground, this sport is definitely worth a shot.

Suggestion: Joshua Tree National Park, Malibu Creek State Park, Point Dume

Volleyball

Add some sand (well, we mean a beach) and you’ll have beach volleyball! It’s one of summer’s most popular outdoor sports, and it’s easy enough for anyone to enjoy. Of course, focus and teamwork is the name of the game, so fire up that competitive spirit and let your inner athlete out!

Suggestion: Zuma Beach County Park and Westward Beach, Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica State Beach

Golf

There are always golf courses around, so why not give it a go? However, if you don’t intend to jump right in before finding out how you feel about it, you can always hit a driving range and rent their clubs and balls to test it out. If you end up spending a couple of hours there without realizing it, that probably means this is something worth exploring further.

Suggestion: Riviera Country Club, The Los Angeles Country Club, Lost Canyons Golf Club

Summer is one of the best times of the year to really relax or stretch your limits outdoors.
